Mekong cycling Explorer 4 days

If one wants to get to know an area, biking is a real delight. Our biking trip is truly an opportunity to participate in the everyday life of the Mekong Delta. We can pedal amid schoolchildren, ride behind women with squealing pigs tied on their bicycle, or talk with men biking to work in suits.  On this special trip, we ride through beautiful areas of lush fruit orchards, endless paddy fields, lively floating market and busy canals.

Day 1: Sai Gon - My Tho - Vinh Long

We travel two hours from Saigon to My Tho where we board our boat. Late morning finds us drifting down bustling arteries of the Mekong from where we veer off to travel down the tranquil canals. Our sightseeing on the island includes a visit to a traditional Mekong Delta home and its kitchen, where we sample seasonal fruit along with tea and honey and even local wine. We then walk to the village's boat landing where we board small sampans and paddle along narrow arroyos (waterways). We will break for lunch at a local restaurant.

Following lunch, we enjoy a leisurely, two-hour afternoon bicycle ride along a narrow dirt road during which we traverse bridges and pass through local farms. Arriving in Cai Be, we board a boat to the floating market and then cruise over 1.5km-wide Mekong river to Binh Hoa Phuoc. You can expect spectacular sunsets along the Mekong. We have dinner at and spend the night in an eco-guesthouse on Binh Hoa Phuoc island.

Day 2: Vinh Long – Long Xuyen – Chau Doc

Following breakfast, under the cool shelter of the green canopy, we bike half an hour to the ferry crossing for Vinh Long. We then have an extended ride to An Hoa and onto Chau Doc. This is a long day on two wheels, going through immense rice fields and countryside villages. After lunch, we transfer to Chau Doc, then on our bike again for Sam mountain, we hike up 2.5km to summit of Sam mountain, enjoy sun set over the panorama rice fields between Viet Nam and Cambodia. Dinner in local restaurant and overnight in hotel.

Day 3: Chau Doc – Tri Ton – Can Tho

Up early for a boat through the amazing riverside market with all its bustling activity and smorgasbord of sounds, colors and smells. Then we cruise through the fish-farm village producing tons and tons of fish beneath hundreds of floating homes. Discover the ethnic Cham village with its famous Mubarak Mosque and observe local women at their traditional weaving. We cycle to Cambodia border with a stop over Tra Su natrual reserve, see Khmer pagoda enroute. Dinner in local restaurant and overnight in hotel.

Day 4: Can Tho – Cai Rang Floating Market – Saigon

Early morning boat trip to Cai Rang floating market & cruise in natural waterways before turning up a quiet canal and mounting our bikes for a ride 2 hrs in single trails along small canals and in countryside road, enjoying the beautiful Delta scenery and meeting the locals (many on bicycle too). Transfer back to Saigon with a stop for lunch on the way. Back to Saigon in the late afternoon. Trip ends
